Many computer problems can be avoided by good regular maintenance which many fail to carry out. Most of the problems are caused by the residue of software programmes left behind after uninstalling or processing.

How many of us see some freebie software programme on the net and download it immediately only to uninstall it a few days later? Similarly using our computers daily or surfing the ‘net creates temporary files some of which never quite go away. The cumulative effect is that the computer gets clogged up with all this residual dross and it is not impossible that 20% or 30% of the available processing capacity is hampered in this way.

What can I do?
To begin click on "My Computer" and then right click on the C drive icon. Left Click on "Properties". Here you will find "Disk Cleanup". In the General Tab click on "Disk Cleanup" and after a few minutes the programme will show you the programmes you can clear out of your computer. This panel is particularly useful as clicking on the top tabs will take you to "Tools" and "De fragmentation". Clicking on "Def rag" and then "analyse" will check out your hard drive to see if it needs defragging. Do this if the programme asks for it. This is a particularly useful programme so take time to explore it. If disk space is a problem look out for the uninstall unused programmes instruction. Here you can uninstall little used Windows and other installed programmes.

These free tools may be sufficient to keep your computer in good shape, but more support may be needed for heavily used computers. To be sure I have added Webroot’s Windows Washer which was originally developed to remove internet history but I now find it very handy to keep my computer in good shape by removing temporary files. It is configured to run on start-up and shut down. At the end of a busy day it is not unusual to find WW removing up to 5000 temporary folders. Finally I added a Registry Cleaner and Optimizer. Of all the tools these are probably the most important for keeping my registry in top form.
